Pawleys Island History

Pawleys is one of the oldest summer retreats on the east coast. It was first settled by rice planters in the early 1700's who were trying to escape the mosquitos along the river in the summers. Every May they moved their families, along with furniture, bedding, and animals, and stayed until the first front in November.

Still standing in the historic district are 12 homes that date from the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. Some of these homes have rooms for summer rental, and several are still owned by the same families as the original owners.

The Gray Man
The Gray Man is a local Pawleys Island legend. He is a friendly spirit who warns residents of an approaching storm. Those who he graces with an 'appearance' know to flee the island immediately. His first recorded sighting was the hurricane of 1822, causing 300 deaths in Charleston and the outlying islands. He appeared to the Lachicotte family in 1893. They fled the island at once. Subsequently, the Sea Islands Hurricane killed approximately 1,500 people. The Gray Man appeared to several people prior to Hurricane Hazel's attack which destroyed 15,000 homes and killed 95 people. Several people claim to have seen The Gray Man two days prior to Hurricane Hugo striking the coast, killing 76 people and causing more than $10 billion in damage.
