Beaufort History

Beaufort, South Carolina was founded in 1711 by the British, but the area of Beaufort and The Lowcountry region in general were the focus of explorations by Europe and Britain beginning as early as the 1500's.

The Spaniards landed near Port Royal Sound in 1520 and named the area Saint Elena. Philip II of Spain requisitioned that a colony be embedded in the Saint Elena area in order to avoid intrusion by the French. An exploration occurred but a colony was not permanently established.

In 1562 a French exploration was sent to the New World to found a colony for French Protestants. Captain Jean Ribaut explored the region from Florida to South Carolina and the Saint Elena area was chosen due to its accessible harbor. He named the harbor Port Royal. He left thirty Protestants at the settlement of what is known today as Parris Island, himself returning to France for supplies. The Protestants quickly became overwhelmed by problems among themselves and with the Indians. They built a boat and set sail back to France. Not to be discouraged, Ribaut founded a colony in the St. Johns River area in Florida, naming his establishment Fort Caroline.

In response, the Spanish sent Menendez de Aviles to the southern coast where he founded St. Augustine. From St. Augustine, he purged the Fort Caroline colony killing Ribaut as well. By 1580, the Spaniards had established a string of forts on the coasts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Sir Francis Drake, an English privateer, raided and burned St. Augustine and forced the abandonment of Spanish forces from Port Royal.

The English arrived in the 1600's looking for a place to situate a British colony. Due to the dangers of trying to settle on what was still deemed Spanish lands, the English moved northward and in 1670 settled on the banks of the Ashley River. By the 1700's English planters had gained a substantial footing at Port Royal and founded the town of Beaufort in 1711.
